By Air
Overseas flights from North America and Europe arrive at Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport. From North America, there are direct flights to Lima from Miami, New York, Newark, Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta. Major carriers are American, Delta, Continental, and LAN. From the UK, flights to Peru involve layovers in either another part of Europe or the United States. American, Continental, and Delta fly through their U.S. hubs on the way to Lima, while European carriers, including Iberia and KLM make stops in continental Europe.
Even if headed elsewhere in Peru, it’s wise to spend at least the first night in Lima to avoid jet lag, see some of the capital, and improve one’s chances to secure advantageous connecting flights to Cusco and other parts of the country (flights to Cusco depart between 6am and 11am only).
By Land
Travelers with plenty of time can journey overland to Peru from Ecuador, Bolivia, or Chile. If traveling from Quito or Guayaquil, you’ll pass through the major northern coastal cities on the way to Lima. From Bolivia, there is frequent service from La Paz and Copacabana to Puno and then on to Cusco. From Chile, most buses travel from Arica to Tacna, making connections to either Arequipa or Lima.

Ten years crisscrossing Peru, producing 240 TV programs on diverse topics. A journalist and writer, for nearly a decade he has directed and hosted the TV program Tiempo de Viaje, in which he travels throughout Peru (and occasionally other countries), documenting natural, historical and human scenes infrequently visited by conventional tourism. His perspective is not that of a tourist, but of a traveler, who immerses himself in what he finds and shies away from nothing in his reporting. He is also the author and/or publisher of an extensive series of books about Peruvian culture. |
